Volunteering

Events such as Skate the Lake would not happen without the support of our fabulous volunteers! Anyone interested in volunteering for Skate the Lake is encouraged to contact us via email: skatethelake@drivesmarte-c.org.

DRIVE SMART Evergreen/Conifer seeks volunteers to participate in and promote all of its community programs and events throughout the year. Please contact us for information.

Listed below are the volunteer positions we will need filled for our New Year's Eve SKATE the LAKE event at the Evergreen Lake House. (Click on any of the jobs, below, to go directly to the job description.)

Activity: Set-Up (20 volunteers needed for outside, 10 needed for inside, from 2-5:00pm)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent at 2:00 pm for your shift. We will give each family a parking pass to park at the Lakehouse.

Outdoor set-up will include setting up fire barrels, firewood piles, picnic tables and laying out carpet among other duties. Steve Oakley will oversee outdoor set-up and clean-up.

Dress appropriately for outdoor work. Please bring work gloves.

Indoor set-up includes blowing up balloons, hanging decorations, banners and balloons among other duties.

Your shift is over once you have been excused by Steve Oakley or Regan Kalahar.

Activity: Ticket Checker (4 volunteers per shift: 5:45-8pm, 8-10pm, 10-Midnight)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift. Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

Your job is to check tickets at the door. Children 8 and under are free, but everyone else must have a ticket. There are no ticket sales the night of the event. Should there be a problem or questions while on duty, send that person into the Volunteer Hospitality Tent for help.

One person should work the line before the doors helping people attach their tickets to their coats.

At the end of your shift, please return your volunteer armband to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Activity: Volunteer Check-In (2 volunteers per shift: 5:30-6:30pm, 7:30-8:30pm, 9:30-10:30pm)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift. Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

Highlight the volunteer’s name when he or she checks in.

Hand out equipment to those who need it. Equipment for the evening includes game equipment, glow necklaces, costumes, hoodies, noise makers and the moneybox.

Assist the volunteers in locating their activity (fire barrells, etc.) on the map provided. Offer refreshments to the volunteers.

At the end of your shift, please leave your volunteer armband in the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Activity: Parking Lot Attendants (5 per shift: 5:30-7pm, 7-8:30pm, 8:30-10pm)


Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift. Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

Take the shuttle back to the shuttle lot pick-up point at Christ the King Church or Safeway parking lots. There will be signs indicating the pick-up point for the shuttle vans.

Check tickets for each person getting on the shuttle vans. Each person riding must have a ticket because there are no ticket sales at the door and they will need to be turned away.

Assist people needing help getting on or off the shuttle van.

At the end of your shift, please ride back to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent and return your armband.

Activity: Fire Barrels (14 volunteers needed for each shift: 6-8pm, 8-10pm, 10-Midnight)


Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift. Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

Each bonfire station will consist of a fire barrel and enough firewood for the evening. You will be notified where your bonfire station is located at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Keep the fire going at all times and invite skaters to warm up by the fire and roast marshmallows. Feel free to put marshmallows on the roasting sticks to entice the skaters over. Help the little ones in getting their marshmallows roasted.

Volunteers please make sure all seven bonfires stay stocked with marshmallows. Extra marshmallows are available in the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Bon fire #1 will also assist with the sleigh rides, helping children and adults onto the wagon.

Please wear appropriate clothing for tending a fire barrel. No long coats or loose scarves. This is a very fun job, but we also want everyone to be safe. Feel free to ask anyone to leave if they are not conducting themselves properly.

Last shift - do not add wood to the fire after 11:00 pm. At 11:30 add snow to put the fire out. At the end of your shift, please return your volunteer armband to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Activity: Costumes/Costume Helpers (8 volunteers needed for each shift: 6-8pm, 8-10pm)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift. Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

The volunteer wearing the costume should allow ample time to change into the costume. Once ready, your job is to just wander through the crowd entertaining mainly the children.

The volunteer who is the helper should stay with and assist their costumed character at all times. You will receive treats for the kids at the beginning of your shift.

At the end of your shift, please leave your costume and volunteer armband and remaining treats in the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Activity: Coordinating Games (6 volunteers needed for each shift: 6-8pm, 8-10pm)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift. Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

Game equipment and prizes are given to the first shift in the Volunteer Hospitality Tent. The first shift will pass the equipment and prizes on to the last shift who will bring all equipment and remaining prizes to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent. Count your equipment - make sure it’s all there.

Broomball and relay races will be from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Orange cones will be used for the relay races. You will be shown the location of your game when you check in. Assist the skaters in any way needed. Feel free to ask anyone to leave if they are not conducting themselves properly. Do not leave the rink during your shift for there are to be no unsupervised games during these hours.

At the end of your shift, please return your volunteer armband to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent. Again, the last shift takes all equipment back to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Activity: Noise Makers (6-8 teenagers needed for each shift: 7-8pm, 11-Midnight)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift. Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

The noise makers will be given to you in the Volunteer Hospitality Tent at either 7pm or 11pm. They will be distributed twice in the evening: once from 7:30-8:00 pm for the 8:00 pm fireworks and then again from 11:30-Midnight for the Midnight firework show.

Wander the crowds handing out the party favors to all. Don’t be shy!

At the end of your shift, please return your volunteer armband and any remaining noise makers to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Activity: Kiddie Rink (2 volunteers needed for each shift: 6-8pm, 8-10pm)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift. Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

The Kiddie Rink will be set up as a safe place for very small children to skate. There will be wood figures and possibly a balloon arch over the rink. Children wanting to play games should go to the Broomball rink or to the rink where they are playing relay games.

Monitor the rink to assure its safety for small children. Assist the skaters and parents in any way needed. Parents should stay with their children and not leave them to your care. You are there only to monitor the activities. Feel free to ask anyone to leave if they are not conducting themselves properly.

At the end of your shift, please return your volunteer armband to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent. The clean-up team at midnight will remove the figures and balloons from the ice.

Activity: Merchandise Sales (2 volunteers for each shift: 6-8pm, 8-10pm)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift.  Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

Your job is to sell Skate the Lake merchandise.  A table will be set up in the Lakehouse where the merchandise will be sold.

The first shift will be given a money box with change. Collect all money from the sales and put it in the money box.  Please do not leave the money box unattended and please do not leave the table until your replace-ment has arrived.  The last shift will turn in the money box at the end of their shift or when all hoodies have sold.

At the end of your shift, please return your volunteer armband to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Activity: Game Coupon Sales (2 volunteers for each shift: 6-9pm, 9-11:30pm)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift.  Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

Your job is to sell Game Coupons for the Carnival Games and Jump Castle.  A tent will be set up in the game area where the coupons will be sold.

The first shift will be given a money box with change and the coupons. Collect all money from the sales and put it in the money box.  Please do not leave the money box unattended and please do not leave the table until your replacement has arrived.  The last shift will turn in the money box at the end of their shift.

At the end of your shift, please return your volunteer armband to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Activity: Dance Tent (2 volunteers needed for each shift: 6-9pm, 9-12pm)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift. Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

The Dance Tent will be set up as a place for teens to dance and listen to the DJ. We need Adults to monitor the teens and ensure everyone’s safety in this area.

At the end of your shift, please return your volunteer armband to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Activity: Volunteer Floater (3 volunteers for each shift: 6-8pm, 8-10pm, 10-Midnight)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent 15 minutes prior to your shift. Allow enough time to park at one of the shuttle lots.

There are three volunteer floaters for each shift. Your main job functions are to collect all of the trash, keep the fire barrel stations stocked with marshmallows and be available as needed. If someone does not show up for their volunteer assignment, then you will fill in for that person or fill in for any other need. Please check in at the tent regularly and be available to Regan Kalahar until the end of your shift.

At the end of your shift, please return your volunteer armband to the Volunteer Hospitality Tent.

Activity: Clean-Up (20 volunteers needed from 11:30pm-1:30am. More volunteers, means we're finished sooner!)

Please arrive at the Volunteer Hospitality Tent at 11:00pm to meet and receive your instructions for the midnight clean-up. You will receive a parking pass for your shift. When the midnight fireworks have ended, we will begin the clean-up.

Outdoor clean-up will include removing the fire barrels, firewood, picnic tables and carpet among other duties. Dress appropriately for outdoor work. Please bring work gloves! Indoor clean-up includes removing all decorations and banners and balloons among other duties.
